It was officially announced that the purpose of the flight was to test spacecraft systems, conduct in-orbit manoeuvres during group flight, and conduct scientific, technical, and medical-biological experiments. In fact, the purpose of the flight was to dock Soyuz-7 and Soyuz-8 ships and to move one astronaut from Soyuz-7 to Soyuz-8 and one in the opposite direction. The cosmonautics of Soyuz-6 were supposed to be nearby (approximately 50 meters) and make a film docking. However, due to the failure of the electronic automatic docking system "Needle, " the docking did not take place. The ships were equipped only for automatic docking, manual docking, under the control of the cosmonautics, was impossible, as the cosmonautics had no means of measuring relative range and speed, not tied to the Needle system. The attempted manual docking failed - the relative speed of the ships was too large, and had to diverge urgently.

On 17 October, Soyuz-7 successfully landed. The item "A set of space objects SOYUZ-7 GLOBE INDICATOR WATCH PHOTO & autograph Soviet" is in sale since Wednesday, June 3, 2020. This item is in the category "Collectibles\Historical Memorabilia\Astronauts & Space Travel\Russian & Soviet Program".
